He is a fellow of IEEE, a distinguished scientist of ACM, and a member of the NSF CISE Advisory Committee.

[Edge Computing] Dr. Shi is one of the world leaders in the edge computing research community, and has been advocating Edge Computing (Fog Computing) since 2014,  a new computing paradigm in which the computing resources are placed at the edge of the Internet, in close proximity to mobile devices, sensors, end users, and the emerging Internet of Everything. His pioneer paper entitled "Edge Computing: Vision and Challenges" has been cited more than 6000 times. In 2016, he co-chaired the NSF Workshop on Grand Challenges in Edge Computing, and was the founding steering committee chair of ACM/IEEE Symposium on Edge Computing (SEC).  He was interviewed by China Science Daily on the Rise of Edge Computing in December 2016. In 2018, Dr. Shi led the development of IEEE Course on Edge Computing. In 2019, Dr. Shi served as the lead guest editor for the edge computing special issue on the prestigious Proceedings of the IEEE journal. Check out his books on Edge Computing: 《边缘计算》(2nd Edition) by Science Press and “Edge Computing: A Primer” by Springer. Their work on edge computing is in part supported by NSF and several industry partners, such as Toyota, Facebook.

[Vehicle Computing] Dr. Shi and his group have been actively working on connected and autonomous driving technologies and its application for mobilitypeople with disabilitites (PWD) and . He is the chair of the IEEE STC on Autonomous Driving Technologies. He also serves as the Center Director of the NSF IUCRC on electric, connected, and autonomous technology for mobility (eCAT). His lab has developed HydraOne, an open-sourced experimental platform for research and education on autonomous driving, the Equinox platform for studying the co-optimization of computing and communication on CAVs. The CAR lab has been dedicated to building safe, real-time, energy-efficient computing systems for autonomous driving. Dr. Shi and his CAR lab were featured on IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Magzine. On November 2021, Springer published their book on Computing Systems for Autonomous Driving. In 2022, Dr. Shi co-founded the IEEE International Conference on Mobility: Operations, Services, and Technologies (MOST), based on a five-year successful run of the Connected and Autonomous Driving workshop (MetroCAD). Since 2022, Dr. Shi has served as the Director of Autoware Center of Excellence at the University of Delaware. Their work has been supported by several OEMs, Tier-1s, in addition to federal agencies, e.g., NSF, USDOT, etc.
